Rollerskating and buffalos may not be the stuff dreams are made of. You can’t rollerskate in a buffalo herd

“You can’t rollerskate in a buffalo herd, but you can be happy if you’ve a mind to.”
– Roger Miller
Roger Miller meant his song to be silly, but it has a deeper meaning for me.
So You Can’t Rollerskate in a Buffalo Herd?
No matter what you want to do and can’t, you can still be happy.
Maybe you want to play in the NBA, but you’re my height. I always enjoyed playing basketball. It would have been nice to get paid.
But no matter how hard I work, no matter how optimistic I am, even if I hire Wilt and MJ to co-coach me, I will never be able to play in the NBA.
That’s not the best example.
Who Wants to Become a Billionaire?
As slim as your or my chances of becoming billionaires are, you have a better chance of becoming a billionaire than I do of playing in the NBA.
If I Become a Billionaire
- I will buy acreage.
- I will raise buffalo.
- I will pave a roller skating path through the range where my buffalo roam.
- I’ll even throw in a few deer and antelope. Just so they can play.
- I’ll invite you over to rollerskate.
If we don’t become billionaires, we can still be happy!
Don’t let your happiness depend on things like becoming a billionaire, a movie star or playing in the NBA.
Don’t even let your happiness depend on something like a new Mercedes or an upscale apartment overlooking Central Park in Manhattan. Or overlooking Sundance Square in Ft. Worth.
Enjoy the simpler things. Having Few Wants Leads to More Happiness.
You Can Be Happy if You’ve a Mind To

Happiness comes from the simple things you enjoy every day, not from the things that impress your social media followers.
Practice Finding Beauty in Simple Things.
If like me, you have big, wild dreams, enjoy the dreaming part. Work towards those big dreams.
Mindfully work hard and relish the progress towards your goals, even if the progress is humble.
At the same time, appreciate the humor in how outlandish your dreams may be.
Practice gratitude for your imagination.
Presence for now and Presents for later.
